Terms of service

These terms are the agreement between you and Chessruto for using Chessruto. By creating an account you accept them.

1. The service

Chessruto is an online chess training service. It offers a course, game studies, an openings explorer, spaced review and, with a Pro subscription, lessons built from your own Chess.com games and engine analysis of your games. Features may change as the service develops; we will not remove a core paid feature during a period you have already paid for.

2. Your account

You must give a valid email address and keep your password secure. You are responsible for activity on your account.
You must be at least 13 years old. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian should agree to these terms with you.
One person per account. Do not share accounts or resell access.

3. Free trial and subscriptions

New accounts get a 7-day free trial of Pro. No payment details are needed, and nothing is charged when the trial ends; your account moves to the free plan unless you subscribe.
Pro is billed in advance for each billing period through our payment processor, Stripe. Prices are in US dollars, and any applicable tax (such as GST) is shown before you pay.
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period until cancelled. You can cancel at any time in Settings; Pro stays active until the end of the period you have paid for.
We may change prices. We will tell you by email at least 30 days before a change applies to your subscription, and you can cancel before it does.
If a payment fails, we may pause Pro features until it succeeds.

4. Refunds and your consumer rights

Our refund policy explains when we give refunds. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other consumer protection laws that cannot be excluded.

5. Chess.com and your games

When you connect a Chess.com username, we read that player’s public games through Chess.com’s published-data API to build your lessons. Only connect a username that is yours. Chessruto is not affiliated with or endorsed by Chess.com.

6. Acceptable use

Do not use the service, its engine or its analysis to cheat in games, including live or correspondence games on any platform.
Do not scrape, overload, reverse engineer or interfere with the service, or try to access other people’s data.
Do not use automated means to call the engine or analysis features beyond normal personal use.

We may suspend or close accounts that break these rules. If we close a paid account for a reason other than a breach, we will refund the unused part of the period.

7. Content and intellectual property

The service, its lessons, text, graphics and code belong to Chessruto or its licensors. You may use them for your own chess study. Engine analysis is produced by Stockfish, which is free software licensed under the GNU GPL version 3; it runs on our servers. Master games are historical game scores; lesson commentary is our own.

8. Availability and liability

We aim to keep the service available and accurate, but chess engines and automated explanations can be wrong, and the service may occasionally be unavailable for maintenance or reasons outside our control. To the extent the law allows, our liability for any loss arising from the service is limited to resupplying the service or refunding what you paid in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss.

9. Ending the agreement

You can stop using Chessruto and delete your account at any time from Settings. Deleting your account cancels any subscription immediately and permanently deletes your data, as described in the privacy policy.

10. Changes and governing law

We may update these terms. For material changes we will give at least 30 days’ notice by email or in the app. These terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, and you and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.
